Emerge America Women Win Big in Pennsylvania and Oregon

May 17, 2017

Washington, DC--This week, while the rest of America was focused on Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey and his leaking of classified documents to the Russians, Emerge America women were quietly winning elections across the country. In Oregon, 11 of the 15 Emerge women running for office won their races on Tuesday. In Portland, sisters Ana del Rocio and Andrea Valderrama won their races for David Douglas School Board. Despite the school district being over 61 percent students of color, the sisters are the first people of color ever elected to the board. In Pennsylvania, six Emerge Pennsylvania alumnae also won their primaries on Tuesday. Janet Diaz, a current class member of Emerge Pennsylvania, won her primary for Lancaster City Council. A Latina, she will bring diversity to the city’s governing board, skill in dealing with regulations she acquired during her career in healthcare and a passion for people’s welfare. These May 16 wins mean that 36 out of the 45 Emerge America women who have run so far in 2017 won their races. Our women aren’t waiting until 2018!
